Kings Canyon - Day 3

Saturday June 20th – Day 3

Kings Canyon National Park

We all woke up fairly early today and were out of camp at 9am to explore the Kings Canyon side of the park.

Our first stop was at the Grant’s Grove Visitor’s Center to view the exhibits, do some shopping, and plan our day in that area. We decided to hike in the General Grant Grove to see the giant Sequoias there too.

Again, the spectacular show of trees didn’t disappoint. There is an area here called “Giant Stump” due to all of the massive tree stumps left over from the logging that happened here before the area became protected. It’s a sad sight to see as these majestic trees were first seen only as opportunities for commerce.

After paying our respects to General Grant we headed out to Hume Lake to have a picnic lunch. Hume turned out to be like sitting in a post card and having lunch with the most beautiful view imagineable.

After lunch we packed up and continued our drive deep into the actual Kings Canyon. It is a steep valley that is at one end carved out by the King’s River still flowing through it, and at the other end formed by the last ice age as the glaciers grinded their way through. Yet another spectacular view that confirmed why this is a protected area.

This was the end of the line for our day today, and also for this destination. Tomorrow we pack up our circus and head for the 1000 Trails location in Oregon House CA. Our evening was spent roasting hot dogs over a campfire for dinner and reminiscing about our excellent day, and the special place that is Sequoia/King’s Canyon.
